Nvidia Asks Retailers To Sell Two Graphics Cards Per Personin News
Despite the cryptocurrency market’s recent drop, cryptocurrency miners are still able to produce a sizeable profit. In 2017 the global cryptocurrency market grew at an exceptional rate and this also caused a huge spike in cryptocurrency miners. Currently, cryptocurrency miners can receive a fast and relatively high ROI on their mining operations. Nvidia is asking retailers to sell a maximum of two graphics cards (of the same model) per person, in an effort to cut back on bulk orders from virtual currency miners. Graphics cards are constantly running out of stock in major retailers on a global scale and graphics card prices have seen a price hike of double and triple their original manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). The mining boom has seen cards like the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti going for over 1500$ despite, almost double its 700-800$ retail price. This shortage of GPUs has made many sell their graphics cards in the second-hand market to miners and return a 100% percent profit while doing so. The company now wants its graphics cards to go to gamers instead and it’s trying to implement that by directly selling on its website and requesting their retailers to only sell up to 2 cards per person.
“All activities related to our GeForce product line are focused on our main audience [gamers]. To ensure that GeForce gamers continue to have good GeForce graphics card availability in the current situation, we recommend that our trading partners make the appropriate arrangements to meet gamers’ needs as usual,” Nvidia spokesperson Boris Böhles told ComputerBase.Perhaps the real solution will be the production of more mining-dedicated graphics cards – with no video output ports – specifically targeting the cryptocurrency market. Fingers crossed that everything settles down sooner rather than later, but we’re not particularly optimistic about that right now. What are your thoughts on NVIDIA’s decision? Do you think that retailers should mainly sell graphics cards to gamers instead of cryptocurrency miners? Let us know in the comments below!
